River is one of those songs where it’s hard to describe how special it is without sounding cheesy. From the first note I’m met with that familiar melancholic nostalgia. It’s driving around looking at Christmas lights when you’re 12, it’s Christmas shopping with your mom at the local strip mall, it’s your first holiday that you didn’t visit home, it’s new traditions and old memories. My mom has always loved this song, and I have so many memories of Christmas mornings and boxing day afternoons set to Joni. When I was younger I could never quite grasp why my mom loved Joni Mitchell so much. It’s only as I’ve gotten older that I find myself crying at the same songs my mom always has. And I think those moments where I see my mom in myself have been some of the most special in my life. This cover is for my Mom, I hope I continue to find you in myself and I hope you like my best attempt at the ineffable Joni. <3
